You know those people who go to their favorite restaurant like every week and are friends with all of the waiters and hostesses? That's kind of what it's like when your photography clients become your friends. Maybe a poor example, but hey, friends eat food together so...
That's what happened with Andrew and Nadine. They were staffing my (Olivia's) YWAM media + missions school in Colorado Springs, and I barely knew them apart from introduction and casual conversation. I was about a week and a half into school when I was approached by Nadine's sister Anita, a fellow student, about whether or not I was willing to work during our lecture phase. Since our school is only 5.5 months in total, I had assumed that, being a full-time student, I wouldn't get a chance to do any photoshoots, so I didn't even try to put myself out there as a photographer. I was surprised, but elated to be given the opportunity to do my favorite thing! We began meeting with Andrew to conspire our plan.
Honestly, it was the cutest thing in the world to see Andrew's elaborate web of planning for the proposal. He had chosen the perfect location - their favorite star-gazing spot in Garden of the Gods. He had gotten her favorite flowers, figured out where I would hide and her friends would stake out, determined the best time of day for lighting, and even gotten her to dress up without being too obvious. He even custom designed her ring. Like, c'mon, how perfect?
It was their 9-month anniversary, and they were on the way to her favorite restaurant when he made the surprise stop. He had (somewhat) successfully alluded her to believe that he would propose the following weekend (but by this point, she was getting suspicious). He didn't give her long to think, and pulled her out of the car and walked her to their spot. Here's what happened:
Slow down there, partner.
Also, please appreciate Nadine's reaction - "Oh my gosh, what are you doing?!"
Talk about precious overload.
It was such an honor to capture such an important memory for these two. Their light-hearted love was and is so tangible. Every moment was pure bliss and full of laughter. Now, we are lifelong friends. Andrew is currently leading my outreach team in Nepal, and Nadine is a darling heart that I adore. Even now, seeing the way that they love each other whilst in separate countries is inspirational.
Congrats, you guys! So thankful and humbled to be a part of your story.

Those of you who know us personally know that we are huge supporters of local business. Especially since we launched Q+C last fall, we have recognized the importance of small businesses, understanding that our communities are truly built upon the creativity that flows from individuals. That being said, we have loved and believed in Gold Rose Society from day 1. Shirah has been a friend of Olivia's since high-school, and when she launched her shop, we knew she would go far. Her products have already been featured in fashion shows in New York City and Charlotte, and everyone who sees her bags goes wild! If you're looking for a quality bag, ethically crafted and hand-made - that you can feel good about buying (since you'll be supporting an amazing company and getting a gorgeous product) - Gold Rose Society is the way to go. And she just added a new bag to her shop! Check it out:
And, the ever-lovely owner herself, Shirah Wilson.
It's been an incredibly busy past couple months over here at Quilt + Color, but we are excited to share our favorite material from September and October very soon! Keep an eye out, and while you're waiting, go check out Gold Rose Society's bags ;)
Happy November, everyone!

A couple of weeks ago, we took portraits of our incredible friend Kristin. She's a rising senior at the creative arts school that Olivia graduated from, and we were so honored when she asked us to document this special time in her life! We had intended to take photos in a rural sunflower field, only to arrive and find the flowers black and recently dead. So we got creative, and the result was worthy of all of the praise hands!
Kristin was such a dear, offering us the room for our creative process. We shared many laughs, smiles, and stories during our time together, making it one of our favorite days this summer! If you're interested in having a fun day out with us, head on over to the contact page to chat :)

Last month, we had the privilege to be a part of an incredibly special day in the lives of Pedro + Corie. We were on family vacation in Topsail Island, and Pedro pulled Jake aside to talk to him about us taking photos when he popped the question to Corie (Jake's cousin) the next evening at sunset after an anniversary dinner. Obviously, we said yes!
Pedro had the family design poster boards with lyrics to their song on them while they were at dinner, and had everyone waiting on the boardwalk to the beach with candles, lyrics, and their song playing as she walked down to meet him. Corie had no idea that he was going to propose as she was walking - she thought it was just a sweet gesture for their anniversary - so the reaction was raw, beautiful, and precious. Here's some of our favorites - enjoy!
Over the past year, we've had a couple photo-shoots with a brilliant local business woman, Shirah Wilson of the Gold Rose Society. Shirah is an ambitious, driven, and creative mind who crafts beautifully unique bags here in our lovely Queen City! Anyone with an eye for beauty would recognize her talent, that has been featured in RAW Artists in NYC + Charlotte, and a fashion show with Ogo New York. Basically, she's awesome. We are big believers in shopping local and small businesses (as we are in that sphere) and love supporting fellow young entrepreneurs to fearlessly pursue their dreams. It's a rough world to dive into, but we believe in Shirah and GRS - they will go far.

Last month, we had the privilege of photographing the beautiful McCourt family at Wild Horse Beach in Corolla, Outer Banks! We had the honor of taking newborn photos of their youngest last year, and it was a joy to work with them again. We chased the sun, traversed the dunes, and shared many laughs in our short time together. Enjoy!
